We are Bart and Loes.
He spent years working on flat roofs as an independent roofer, while she cut the hair of half the village at home – with coffee, cookies, and good conversations.
Hard work? We’ve been doing that since we could walk. But one day, we were faced with the big question:
"Is this it?"
Spoiler: no, it’s not.
Always on the move. Always searching. For peace, space, something that really feels right.
We went on a trip – all four of us, in a camper. Eight months long.
From place to place. We listened to stories, let life in.
And somewhere along the way, it happened: we got inspired.
We started dreaming. Fantasizing.
Researching. Talking, looking, feeling.
And little by little, it became real.
We decided: we're going to do this. For real.
We sold our house and went house hunting in Spain.
And we found it – a rough diamond in Coín, with mature trees, chirping birds, and a view that leaves you speechless. Not a ruin, but definitely a project.
The potential was clear. This was it.
But the purchase? That was tough.
Nothing came easy. It was a rollercoaster of emotions.
We said goodbye to friends and family and left everything behind.
And thought: we’ll manage.
But along the way, we discovered that the mortgage was much worse than we’d been led to believe.
We had been misinformed from the start, and suddenly we were facing a huge setback.
This meant our renovation fund was almost gone, but we still saw the potential and decided not to give up.
There was only one thing to do: push forward. Don’t stop until it’s done.
We knew: by the end of July, everything had to be running. Operational. Done.
No room for delays. All or nothing.
So: sleeves rolled up. Teeth gritted. We wouldn’t let go.
Eight days a week. Thirty hours a day.
Four-and-a-half months straight. Day in, day out.
We were exhausted. But we did it.
We still can’t believe it.
We’re drained, but so incredibly proud.
It turned out amazing.
Without help? Never would have worked.
So grateful for the friends, family, old acquaintances, and new heroes who showed up exactly when needed.
All credit to you. You know who you are.
And Kae and Yuki?
They adapted incredibly quickly.
From day one, they felt at home.
Yuki has been at school for almost four months, and Kae will join in September – with a big smile and loads of enthusiasm.
They’ve made this journey just as much as we have.
And now?
Now we get to do what we’ve been working towards all along:
welcoming guests.
That’s what makes us happy.
People landing here. Laughing. Sleeping. Reading. Splashing. Sunbathing. Swimming.
Having a great time, in a place that we’ve created ourselves and are so proud of. The best part is being able to share this place with others.
Whether you sleep in a room or come with your camper: the door is always open.
The foundation is solid. The rest? Gets a little better every day.
We were looking for something, and we found it.
A dream come true. Pushing our limits.
Emigrating to Spain with two small children.
We are Bart, Loes, Kae, and Yuki – and we warmly welcome you to Finca KaYu.
